ANS Makes History in AASCA Soccer 2019

On February 24th, the ANS male soccer team made history as it was crowned champion of AASCA Soccer for the first time.

High School athletes from 18 different schools traveled to Panama, from February 20th to February 24th, to compete in the international soccer tournament of the Association of American Schools of Central America.

Throughout this event, our female and male teams each played five games. On Friday, the ANS male team played against the Escuela Internacional Sampedrana, from Honduras, defeating them 2-0. This game secured our school’s inclusion in the finals, which they played against the Lincoln School of Costa Rica.

The Championship Game took place Saturday afternoon. In the 8th minute, Mauricio Mora scored a goal for ANS. However, Lincoln tied the game. After the game time ended with a 1-1 match, it proceeded to extra time. With the score still remaining the same, a penalty shootout began. As Eduardo Álvarez, Orlando Castillo, Arlin Espinoza, Frank Goff, and Gustavo Díaz scored goals, the game concluded with a 5-4 score! After this victory, Eduardo Álvarez and Guillermo Terán (both captains) were named MVPs.

“Coach Mendez… we finally made it!” exclaimed captain Eduardo Álvarez. “This achievement goes to every single parent… to every person who has supported us, to every (ANS) soccer generation, and to all Nicaragua.”

On top of winning the men’s soccer division, ANS’ female team won the Sportsmanship Award, given to honor the team that played with ethics, fairness, and respect.

“These teams never took anything for granted; they worked passionately,” said the ANS athletic director, Andrei Kulyk. “They were like pieces of perfect machinery… all fit and adjusted to each other.”

Our team’s achievement is a source of national pride; it was covered by national news.

Congratulations Tigers!
