Hi, our names are Isabella Alvarado and Mikela Lazo and we are speaking on behalf of the 6th grade students of ANS. Recently, we wanted to make our grade’s promotion shirt. However, our counselor said that we could not use a Marvel superhero design because it was copyright. We understood that completely. We didn’t want to break the law. But, it has come to our attention that the counselor prohibited us from using such designs while another grade was permitted. We are justifiably upset because our school is made up of students who share the same equal rights. What applies to us should apply to other grades as well because that is a common courtesy that we should be provided. Our petition is asking to make the school more aware and concerned of how we feel of this unjustice. All we are asking, is for equal rights. While we know that it may seem unfair to the 10th graders, it is mostly unfair to us. If our school is a supporting environment of equality as they say it is, then we should be treated as fairly as anyone else in this school. All we are asking for is that our school applies the same rules and the same treatment to everyone . We understand that you don’t want any copyright or plagiarism issues. We know what you may be thinking… “It’s just a silly promotion shirt”, and you may be right. But just think about it, we all share classrooms, teachers, food court, dress codes, but the Promotion Shirt is such a big deal because it is the one thing we can call ours. Plus, teachers are always talking about how we represent our school outside campus, and by having a unimaginative, uncreative, and non-modern shirt to wear after school, people are going to think that the American Nicaraguan School is keeping our quality to vote for our representation on lockdown. Just like the students are able to vote STUCO to be a voice for us, the shirts are as important. Designing these shirts and being able to pick what we are going to wear once in awhile isn’t unhealthy. In fact, we think it’s healthy that we get to choose who we want to be and who we want to represent with our image. We are respectfully asking you to take in consideration our proposal and as we’ll take in count our votes.
