Throughout the world, there are those who are determined to help those in need and it is these people who sacrifice their time for the improvement of society.
At ANS, we have a strong commitment towards helping our community, and many of us can identify with singer Aloe Blacc’s statement, ‘’‘’People need to spread love towards strangers. We all bleed the same blood and we are all part of a global community now.’’ One of the many leaders of social change at ANS is the community service club, Fabretto. The objective of this club is to help improve the situation of education in Nicaragua by promoting the non-profit organization, sponsoring a classroom, and providing child development materials and resources throughout the year.
One of the objectives of the club is to create awareness about the importance of education and the precarious situation that Nicaragua faces regarding the learning and development of underprivileged children. In our developing country, education is underfunded with the majority of the population not graduating high school. The club would like to contribute back to the community and Nicaragua by making a small change in the lives of these children.
We have interviewed the secretary and one of the founders of this club, Massiel Flores, an 11th grade student. We asked her why the club was started. She kindly said, “My friends and I really wanted to give back to the world and make an impact. We said to ourselves, how better to do that, than helping the Nicaraguan children. We want to serve as a role models to Nicaraguan children by providing them with valuable tools, such as education.’’
When asked about her most successful activity for fundraising, she said,” I would say that it will have to be our first fundraiser, which was hairspray painting in the fall festival at our school. Even though, we did make an important amount of money, the experience made it worth it. “Also, with the funds raised, we were able to make a donation to the Fabretto organization, so they can use it for future events and activities.’’
Massiel also stated that she had some predetermined goals, “Our biggest goal is to make an impact on the children’s life and also to be able to raise enough money to be able to sponsor a classroom. Also, to spread the word around Nicaragua and the world about our organization and to get more people involved.’’
Massiel concluded by stating, “I find what we are doing a really important part of my life. We are trying to change the world, by helping one child at a time.’’
