The anatomy and physiology class had the incredible opportunity of attending a first-aid certification class with La Cruz Roja (Red Cross) of Nicaragua on April 25th from 8 am to 3:30 pm. Twelve students of 11th and 12th grades were able to learn simple techniques that when performed well, can save a life.
First aid is performed by those who are trained in the moment of the incident while professional help is arriving.
Two professionals taught with presentations and hands-on activities. They handed out booklets with key information as well as very clear explanations and diagrams.
Some of the methods taught were that CPR is necessary to help a person whose heart is not beating. Another method was the Heimlich maneuver which helps people whose airway is obstructed. The students were also taught to treat open wounds, burns and ways to put on bandages.
It was an amazing opportunity for students to learn life-saving skills that help our community!
