2008 English 12 SUMMER READING

REQUIRED ACTIVITIES:

1. Choose and check out from the library one of the novels listed below.

· A Separate Peace                       

· Gulliver's Travels                        

· The Color Purple                         

· Siddhartha                                 

· Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man     

· Bless Me, Ultima

2. Choose and complete one of the four additional activities and bring to class on

7 AUGUST (see below for details):

a. Movie poster

b. CD cover

c. Diary or Journal

d. You’re the author

*I do not accept late work, so plan ahead. If you are out of the country, you must send your work via another classmate or email (barbshakespeare@yahoo.com). Be responsible, and start out in good standing for English 12.

3. Prepare for a major exam: You will take an exam over the novel on 11 August. The exam will cover the following:

a. Plot

b. Characters

c. Setting (historical/social context as well as time and place)

d. Theme(s)

e. Conflict(s)

f. Major symbols & motifs

g. Major quotes (be prepared to note who said the quote, why the quote is important in the novel, and what figures of speech are in the quote)

(DO NOT COUNT ON SPARK NOTES. YOU WON’T PASS IF YOU DON’T READ THE NOVEL. TRUST ME.)

SELECT ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FOUR ACTIVITIES (see #2 above)

A. Movie Poster: Imagine that you are a movie director trying to produce a movie version of the book that you read. Your task is to cast and create a movie poster for your film.

Please include each of the following:

¨ The actors that will be starring in the movie

¨ On a separate piece of paper explain why you selected each

¨ actor to play their respective character

¨ The setting : where the movie will take place

¨ The theme song of the movie

B. Make a CD Cover: You are a music producer and you have been asked to create a CD for the movie based on the book that you have read.

Please include the following:

¨ A list of 10 songs for the CD

¨ For each song include the name of the song

¨ Include the lyrics

¨ The CD cover

¨ On a separate piece of paper explain why you have selected

¨ these particular songs

C. 3. Create a Diary/Journal: You will create a diary/journal for a character in the novel.

Please include the following:

¨ Five entries explaining your character’s feelings about the events and characters in the book

¨ Each entry should consist of two paragraphs

¨ Be sure to include a creative journal/diary cover

D. You’re the Author! You are the author. You have decided to write an additional chapter to the book you just read. Your chapter should be a minimum of two pages.

Suggestions:

¨ Think about where your character may be in five years

¨ You may want to create a different ending

¨ Think about adding an additional character
