It is widely acknowledged in education that facility in reading is the single most significant factor associated with overall academic success at all levels.
Special assistance is provided by the Elementary Reading Specialist for selected students at the elementary school level to enhance reading skills. Following an assessment or a referral, testing serves to identify a reading level to help identify the appropriate program of intervention. Assistance is most often one to one, and sometimes delivered in a group context. Students are “graduated” from the program when it is assessed that they have reached a level sufficient to function successfully within the regular academic program.
The Specialist also collaborates closely with classroom teachers to identify students who possess reading difficulties and the resources required to assist them in the regular classroom setting.
Aside from the special assistance provided, it is always important that all students undertake independent, supplementary reading (English language text) both at school and at home to enhance overall academic performance.
