PreKindergarten – Grade 8
College Admission and career awareness begins at an early age when children notice what Mommy and Daddy do during the day. Although in young children there is neither an interest in college nor understanding of higher education, certain attitudes are passed on from parents to their children, in part, through their praise of their child’s positive learning accomplishments. Keeping the line of communication open at a young age provides the foundation for being able to talk with your child during all the stages of their life. The attention parents give their children is a contributing factor helping them to become a successful person. Communication is an ongoing process.
The first step in a child’s career awareness might begin when he/she meets a policeman or sees a fireman on television. Children can be impressed by many things resulting in a remark like “I want to be a fireman.” As they mature, they will become increasingly aware of various occupations. Many class activities at ANS help a youngster learn what they enjoy in school and what kinds of things people do when they grow up. It is a natural result for them to start discovering that sometimes people need to continue their education to acquire the skill to follow certain occupations. This realization leads to the next step which is to become interested in realistic occupational options and in colleges.
Observation is a major component in influencing future choices of careers and admission to college. Observation begins at home from the earliest age to Grade 8 and beyond. During this time your son/daughter will observe many behaviors and acquire new knowledge. Observation and knowledge include the following areas:
There is no set calendar for when and how deep your son/daughter understanding will be in regard to their future career or attending college. Each child is special and matures at a different rate. Building blocks to growth have many facets with their parents acting as their child’s best cheerleaders during each step of the way. ANS adds to this foundation by providing a strong, caring educational program and through the development of the English language skills that characterize the broadest array of vocational options. All of these factors expand your son/daughter’s circle of awareness of who they are and how they choose to direct their life.
