Higher Education in Paraguay

Background

There are two universities in Paraguay where a student can complete a course of study (earn a bachelor's degree) and apply to universities in the United States for graduate school without (in most cases) having to complete an extra year to fulfill stateside requirements. The reason that these schools are respected by the United States is due to the credentials of their faculty members and the university's history of preparing students to follow successful careers. These schools are the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion and the Universidad Catolica also located in Asuncion .

The Univesidad Nacional de Asuncion is a non-denominational institute. Applicants need to enroll in a preparatory course for one to three months prior to applying as there is limited enrollment in some areas of study. Applicants must contact the department of what they wish to study to know when the dates are to take the entrance tests. The number of tests may range between 2 and 3. Each department will determine their own acceptance marks. Campuses are located throughout Asuncion ,

The Universidad Catolica in Asuncion accepts students for a general course of study for the first semester. It is recommended that students decide what career they will follow and where they plan to live in the future. For example: Paraguayan students who wish to remain in Paraguay to become physicians, lawyers or architects should consider pursuing their higher education in their home country. Tests are administered at the end of the first semester. These performance tests will be used to determine if a student is allowed to remain. Each major takes between 4 to 6 years to complete

The Application Process

  • The Universida Nacional de Asuncion applicants must contact the department to which they are applying for test dates and other important information.
  • The Universidad Catolica in Asuncion applicants must apply during July or August.

Cost of Universities

  • The Universidad Nacional de Asuncion tuition costs vary as to the area of study. In order to give some idea, the English Department (Instituto Superior de Lenguas) costs $92 to $155 ( U.S. ) per year with additional fees for transcripts, etc. at a minimal expense. Most students live at home and commute to various campus locations. Housing costs will vary.
  • The Universidad Catolica in Asuncion varies in cost and tuition can be made through monthly payments. Please contact the University for the Latest Tuition Fees.
