Students should understand the fundamental practices that will ensure success in school .  Following is a check list of the range of interventions that together will help students and parents to plan for a positive school experience throughout the grades.  (If a secondary school student, for example, earns two D grades or an F , this is a serious signal that changes must be made quickly.)  Following are among the various steps necessary for improvement and success:

Attend all classes.
Use the best efforts to derive maximum benefit from each class (e.g., maintain attention, minimize distractions, use effective note taking techniques, ask relevant questions, participate fully, etc.).
Establish and maintain a schedule for after-school assistance from teachers.
Plan well-ahead for assignments, exams, etc.
Get home tutoring.
Establish a consistent routine for work completion at home (time and place are important).
Get rid of “procrastination”.
Get organized and stay organized.
Expose yourself to English vocabulary, over and above the usual classroom requirements … READ, READ, READ.
Establish a routine of acquiring weekly assessment from teachers, to be shared with parents at home.
There is no such thing as “I have no homework today.”
Use the summer to reinforce academic skills e.g., summer school, academic programs abroad.
Establish good consequences for work completion.  Deprive yourself of positive consequences for work non-completion.

All of the above steps require that the student takes the initiative.  Remember the motto:

“If it's gonna be, it's up to me!”
