Student Services maintains a resource center that contains the range of materials necessary to assist students with career decision making and post secondary planning. A counselor is specially assigned to assist students with the career decision process, manages student use of the Center, maintains adequate resources, arranges informational meetings between students and post secondary schools, and assists students with the application process. The college counselor has access to the web site addresses of almost every college and university in the world. There is a computer located in the center to aid students who wish to access internet for additional career and university references or to apply to programs and universities online.
Career Awareness
For a printout of job descriptions, nature of the work, working conditions, training, other qualifications and advancement, job outlook and earnings please refer to the U.S. Department of Labor's web site where the Occupational Outlook Handbook is posted. This information is slanted from the view of the U.S. but does provide invaluable information for those wanting in-depth career guidance. The web site is:
Students who have not made up their mind as to what career they wish to follow and who have not taken the Harrington-O'Shea Career Decision-Making System assessment that is given at ANS, can take other helpful assessments online. Caution should be given on how these results are used as they provide only one piece of the puzzle in helping choose a career. Realistic expectations must match ability with interest. For example: a student who would love to be a pilot and has done poorly in math for years would probably not be a good match for this vocation.
The following web sites feature free career interest assessments:
This site is seven pages long and takes about 15 minutes to take. It is designed for high school students to those persons who are retired. The results might be used in conjunction with the following aptitude assessment.
This 100 response assessment can be used by students 14 and older. It takes about 30 minutes to complete and results are given in the form of a scale grid.
There are many other helpful tests available on the internet that can be found using a search vehicle with “aptitude tests” as the key words. Beware as many charge a fee.

Students in their senior year will be most concerned with timely attention to the post secondary application process. Please note that career exploration should start early in a student's school career, followed by post secondary program exploration. College applications for college entrance and for financial aid (if needed) are the last steps of the guidance process at ANS and begin during a student's junior year. The college counselor at ANS strives to infuse awareness of the necessary activities and an appropriate timeline. Both students and their parents have responsibilities in bringing about a successful outcome and meeting all due dates. For more detailed information on how to apply to colleges and financial aid refer to the following school site:
