Message from the Athletic Director
Oswaldo Ortiz F.
The ANS athletic program is an integral part of our school's curriculum, and, as such, it provides opportunities for participation, and learning. The program strives to promote healthy competition; to embody the highest ideals of sportsmanship and respect; and . encourage students to compete at the highest level their ability will allow. Accordingly, ANS provides appropriate levels of competition for each athlete.
As a community, ANS meets the challenges of its athletic philosophy through the cultivation of the following values:
· A commitment to achieving individual and team goals;
· A commitment to diligent preparation, fair play, and self-discipline;
· A commitment to exercise and competition which contributes to the development of an athlete's mental, emotional, and physical well being;
· A commitment to age- and skill-appropriate coaching and competition at every level.
The strength of the ANS Athletics Program is a tribute to the caliber of our students and our well qualified coaching staff, and also to the support of our parent community. We recognize the importance of the relationship among teammates, and between the members of the team and its coach as well as the importance of ANS students, parents, and coaches demonstrating, at all times, respect for opponents, officials, rules of competition, and the School as a whole.
Varsity Teams
Varsity level participation is an advanced level of play: students should start the season in proper condition, have the appropriate fundamental skills, and know basic strategies and all rules. ANS’s goal at this level is to field the strongest, most competitive team. (Varsity players do not necessarily play in every competitive game). Varsity Teams have a no-cut policy.
Junior Varsity Teams
The Junior Varsity level stresses learning and refining fundamental skills, game strategies, game knowledge, and rules. The Junior Varsity teams are a building block for the Varsity teams. Participation is the hallmark of the Junior Varsity level. At this level, it is anticipated that all team members will play in every game. (As long as they meet the requirement of 80% attendance to practices). The Junior Varsity Teams have a no-cut policy.
Middle School Teams
Middle School teams have a no-cut policy, and every participant is provided an opportunity to play on a team.. The emphasis at this level is on instruction, development, teamwork, fair play, and sportsmanship. Participation is a key component for ANS Middle School teams. At this level, it is anticipated that all team members will play in every game. (As long as they meet the requirement of 80% attendance to team practices.)When there are large numbers of students participating in a sport, there may be multiple teams based on ability level. With the Athletic Director's approval, seven and eighth-grade students who have demonstrated exceptional proficiency in a sport, may try out for a High School team. All ANS athletic activities will be centered on having fun, building a solid skill base, and getting a lot of action during game and scrimmage situations. With the exception of beginner’s swim classes all sessions are free of charge.
