It’s time to restart ANS athletic activities for the second semester of this 2006-2007 school year. The hottest months of the year are rapidly approaching. However, high temperatures do not bother the students who have eagerly attended practices and who are willing to participate in different tournaments and competitions scheduled for this semester.

First Semester Tournaments & Activities

Notredame Cup January 29 - March 30
Our Elementary soccer team will participate, and so will our Elementary Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball Teams.

Lincoln Cup February 22 - April 26
In this tournament our Elementary Girls, Middle School Boys and Varsity Boys Basketball Teams will participate. In volleyball we will also be well represented by our elementary and secondary teams. In soccer both elementary teams will compete.

Copa Challenger February 5 - February 17 Copa Challenger is a tournament that is organized by our school. Its major goal is to prepare our varsity soccer teams for the AASCA tournaments usually scheduled in March. For that reason our teams play college teams. This year three strong teams participated in the Cup: Don Bosco, UAM and DIRITA F.C. Pictures

Four of our players were appointed as member of the All Star Team”. They were: Gerzan Ortiz, Hugo Paguaga, Carlos Chamorro and Nelson Estrada.

AASCA Soccer tournament March 7 - March 11
This regional soccer tournament will be organized by Escuela Internacional Sampedrana and will take place on March 7-11 with the representation of Escuela Americana de El Salvador, Escuela Internacional Sampedrana (Honduras), Colegio Decroly Americano (Guatemala), Escuela Americana de Tegucigalpa (Honduras), Colegio Interamericano(Guatemala), Colegio Americano de Guatemala (Guatemala) and ANS.

Our boys varsity soccer team which has been practicing since last August has practiced with even more intensity for the last 7 weeks. During this time they have trained from Monday to Saturday for two hours a day. This team has also played 12 matches, 7 of which were vs. college teams. We wish the team the very best! Pictures

Soccer Workshop
This semester all of our after school soccer coaches and our Regular PE teachers are being trained by a FIFA instructor who is updating them on the most modern soccer techniques. These workshops started on February 1st and will last until the end of May. They take place every Thursday and each session lasts two hours. Our students will benefit from this initiative. Pictures

Coach of the 2006 year
The National Basketball Federation recognized our Physical Education teacher and Varsity Boys Basketball Coach, Mr. Angel Mallona as the 2006 Coach of the Year. ANS is proud of this recognition.

Swimming
Physical Education: Our 6 grade students have started having their swim lessons. They are enjoying having a good time in our remodeled swimming pool. The time they spend in these classes is so interesting that some of them have asked us to continue “for a little more”. This is understandable because in these classes students have the opportunity to practice three distinct swim styles (8 classes), rescue in swimming pools (3 classes), and water polo (4 classes). ANS Swim School : Very soon ANS will open its own Swim school that will serve not only families from ANS community but families from the greater community as well. This program will offer swimming classes for children from 3 years of age and up, advanced swimming, swimming lessons for adults, acuaerobics for women, and free style swimming, etc. A schedule of lessons and additional information will be available very soon.

Swimming Coach
Andriy Kulyk
is one of the “ANS Las Pirañas” swim coaches. He is also an active swimmer and this year he is competing too. On February 10 and 11 he participated in the Open National Swim Contest and won two gold medals: 50 meters free style and 50 meters breast stroke. On February 24, he again had an outstanding performance this time competing in the Open water competition “Cross to the Xiloa Lagoon” achieving the third place among 19 competitors.

Ninth Grade Track and Field
During the month of January, 9 graders performed long and triple jump units. The winners of these competitions were:

Girls Long Jump:
Zarruc Urcuyo 3:30 mts
Girls Triple Jump: Rossana Alvarez 6:94 mts
Boys Long Jump: Franco Lacayo 4:75 mts
Boys Triple Jump: Leonel Lacayo 10.01 mts

During the month of February 9 graders performed the Shot-put and discus throwing units. The winners of the competition were:

Girls Shot Put: Claudia Leal 6:90
Girls Discus Throwing : Paola Guerrero 13:95
Boys Shot Put: Leonel Lacayo 12:30
Boys Discus Throwing : Alejandro Arguello 29:40

Chess
Our PE curriculum was enriched this year with the inclusion of chess. Chess is now taught to students 5 to 10 grades. We have observed that students enjoy this “mental sport” which complements their development as a whole.
In January and February 6 and 7 graders had their respective chess lessons and they learned special movements, The Castling and chess terminology. They also learned about the algebraic chess notation. Pictures
